This directional microphone was custom made and mass produced with a low profile micro-miniature, patent pending, directional microphone technology. The surface mount version of this custom hardware was made as an assistive listening device for people who are hard of hearing and either are uninsured or cannot afford expensive costs that come with obtaining a hearing aid. This directional microphone captures sound within a 6 foot zone in front of the user, and helps to focus and clarify conversations in noisy environments, while reducing the effects of extraneous noise. A through-hole component version of this microphone was also made as a kit for the DIY community and used as a teaching tool in electronics courses. This project was made with NYU’s Scientist in Residence, Eric Rosenthal.
