By considering the interdependent relationship between materials as conduits of sound from an ecological perspective, we can facilitate a demystification of materials as vehicles, agents and collaborative devices that contribute to the shaping of our sonic perception. For the collaborations below my specific contribution for A Drawing Out :: A Lactic Orchestration was the design and fabrication of custom made hardware using MEMS microphones. The microphone configuration amplifies the machine sounds of breast pumps in combination with the unique variation of the sounds of bodies that utilize the machines to express breast milk. The small signature of the microphones designed to fit inside the pump allow for the capture of each performer’s unique body/sonic signature. These sounds are then mixed and performed live in front of an audience.
